The 10th annual Month of the Young Adolescent begins in October 2006, and we’re asking 10- to 15-year-olds to join us in celebrating the 10-year anniversary of this advocacy program. One of the highlights of Month of the Young Adolescent is the online publication “Expressions from the Middle.”

This publication features original artwork and book reviews submitted by young adolescents from around the world. If one of your students’ artwork or writing is selected to be featured in “Expressions from the Middle,” he or she will receive a cash prize and international recognition!

Please help your students become actively involved in Month of the Young Adolescent.

Art Teachers: Submit your students’ best Month of the Young Adolescent artwork. Types of media accepted, but not limited to: oil, acrylic, or watercolor painting; charcoal, or colored pencil drawing; 3-D submissions such as sculpture; and computer generated graphics. NMSA will not accept pencil or pen drawings on notepad paper. For examples of high-quality student work view last year’s contest winners at www.nmsa.org/2005expressions. Color copies and quality photos of artwork are preferred (especially for 3-D projects); however, we do accept original artwork. Please keep in mind that submissions will not be returned.

English Teachers: Please make sure your students understand the criteria for writing submissions.  They must write a critical book review on a piece of young adolescent literature they have read.  Submissions must be 600 words or less (give or take a few words), and we must be able to read the submissions (typewritten preferred). Please encourage students to keep a copy of their work.  Submissions will not be returned.
